Mother Knows Mahj

My name is Bekah Phillips and I love teaching American mahjong! I am married and have 2 sons. What I love most about the game of mahjong is how it brings people together and creates lasting friendships. I also love the strategy involved and how it brings out some friendly competition. :) 

Where do you teach? 

Lubbock, Texas and the surrounding areas in west Texas

Where, when and how did you learn mahjong? 

My sweet neighbor invited me to a charity event that supports women and children in the Lubbock community called Mahjong Monday in Lubbock, Tx. Being a Pediatrician I wanted to be supportive but also was like, “what in the heck is mahjong?!”  It sparked my interest and the rest is history!

Tell us why you love Mahjong?

What I love most about mahjong is the friendships I’ve made, not just playing but by teaching! I’ve become friends with so many of my former students. I also really love the fact that it can help reduce your risk of dementia. So play more mahjong! Doctors’s orders!

What is your favorite mahjong memory? 

My last birthday, my best friend threw me a mahjong birthday party and since the weather wasn’t great, we move the tables and umbrellas indoors. It was beautiful and just the best time! Also, who doesn’t love a good birthday “mahjong!?”

What is your favorite NJML line or mahjong tile? 

Flower tiles of course! I love gardening, especially roses which is why my logo is covered in them😆.

What makes you laugh? 

Silly dances especially my buddy Ashley doing the robot! I laugh so hard I cry!🤣

One thing you can't live without. 

Spring! I can’t live without smelling all the roses!

Motto for life

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.

What would you sing on Karaoke night?

Anything from the Dixie Chicks, The Cranberries or Taylor Swift

What Mahjong Line set is your favorite to play on?

I’ve always had a hard time answering this question until someone asked me which one I would grab in a fire and I immediately said The Classic Line: Crisp White! I love the flowers in the vases and the dragons are fierce. The Lucky Line: Jade Green 🍀 are a close second though. That green color is gorg!

The person, alive or dead, you would love to have at your dinner party.

My hubby:). He makes me laugh and tells the best stories!

Stranded on a desert island and you only have one movie to watch...

Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet, haha I’m a sucker for a good Jane Austen movie or book!
