New players to American Mahjong
Some have asked if new players can learn on our tiles to which we say, HECK YES. Our tiles are designed for beginners and experienced players, alike. If you know how to play mahjong, the learning curve to get used to the new design is a short and fun one…you’ll be up to speed in no time.
For beginners, our minimal designs are similar to the traditional tiles but we simplify some things that can confuse a new player, namely: the numbers on flowers, mistaking the bird bam for a flower, and adding more color to the suits so it's easier on the eye to distinguish from afar, etc. Our minimal designs are ideal for new players. That being said, many new players have opted for the Cheeky or Botanical designs because they are drawn to the designs. The learning curve for a new player is the same for any set, whether using ours or a traditional set…it just depends on what you want to feast your eyes upon.
Each tile is made of a custom acrylic color and then is hand-painted with a five-color paint process. Each set takes days to complete and a human hand is in charge so there will be slight variations across tiles which we consider part of the unique beauty of the sets.
Back of tile
Our original artwork is on the front/face of the tile, representing the various suits in a unique and fun way. We adorn the back of the tile with our brand mark, a simple diagonal line. The color of the line varies by set.
Each set comes with four blanks. The primary purpose of blanks is to act as a replacement of a lost tile although some players actually play with blanks in the game.
Cleaning the playing mat
The mat is made out of a durable neoprene that can take a beating. But if you get a stain on it, we have found the best remedy to be dropping it in your washing machine. Use a delicate detergent, cold water, and gentle cycle (with nothing else in the washer). When finished, lay flat to air dry. It takes a good 24-hours to fully dry. We can’t guarantee that this will work with every stain but give it a try.
