The Big Card: FAQs

What is The Big Card?

The Big Card is an American Mahjong card created by the big brains at The Mahjong Line and I LOVE MAHJ.  Our love of competitive play inspired us to create a card with a statistically-supported scoring system.  We also wanted a fresh card ready each January, bringing new energy to the slower winter months.  And we are proud that 30% of card sales from our website are donated to charity.

Why is it called The Big Card?

We like big ideas. Big brains. And big fun. Thus, The Big Card.  We think The Big Card is a game-changer full of BIG ideas like smart design, a statistically-supported points system, dedicated customer support and a verifiable amount given to charity every year.

Does The Big Card use traditional American Mahjong rules and terminology?

Yes! The Big Card follows the long-standing rules and traditional terminology of American Mahjong. It stays true to the classic game while introducing a few fresh design updates we think you’re going to love.

How much does The Big Card cost?
The Big Card costs $10 plus shipping. For the first year, we’re offering one complimentary card per customer with a unique email and U.S. shipping address. Use THEBIGCARD coupon code during checkout. Customers are responsible only for USPS shipping costs.

Will The Big Card be offered digitally?

The Big Card is available only in physical form and is not offered digitally. There is a strong charitable component built into this product - 30% of all cards sold through our website are donated to charity. To maximize that impact, we focus exclusively on the sale of physical cards.

When is The Big Card released?

The Big Card will ship every year at the end of December. The quiet months of January and February are prime game time, and the new card is ready to bring the fun.

What is the size of The Big Card?

The Big Card is a trifold and measures 6" x 5.25" when folded.

Why did you add line numbers to The Big Card?

We added line numbers to make it easier for players to reference specific hands on the card. This is helpful during teaching, gameplay, and even when declaring mahjong, as players can quickly identify the hand they completed by noting the section and line number.

How did you choose the hands for 2026?

We developed the hands on The Big Card 2026 through a collaborative, data-driven, and creative process. The Mahjong Line, I LOVE MAHJ, and a team of mahjong experts began with a broad range of fresh, original hand concepts. From there, we moved through multiple rounds of design, refinement, play-testing, and computer simulations to ensure every hand felt exciting, fair, and highly playable.

Once the draft card was complete, it underwent rigorous validation. The entire card was run through more than one million simulated games on the I LOVE MAHJ platform to assess balance, difficulty, switchability, and point alignment. Based on those results, we made final adjustments to ensure the 2026 card delivers a dynamic, well-rounded playing experience - one that feels both innovative and true to American Mahjong tradition.

Is there a charitable component to The Big Card?

Absolutely. American Mahjong has always been rooted in community and generosity.  From its earliest days, the game held special meaning in Jewish women’s circles - offering not only friendship and connection but also a way to give back. We’re proud to carry that tradition forward by giving back 30% for each card purchased on our website.

How much does The Big Card give back?
For every card sold through The Mahjong Line website, 30% is donated to charity. Each quarter, we highlight and support a new mission, ensuring our impact reaches a range of deserving causes.
Which charity benefits from sales of The Big Card?

The supported charity rotates each quarter. For 2026, the first quarter beneficiary is Make‑A‑Wish. Our pending second quarter charity partner is Jewish Federations of North America.

How did you select the colors for the hands?

We carefully selected three colors that work harmoniously together, ensuring each hand is easy to read while avoiding any suggestion that the colors correspond to specific suits.  We did not want to use red and green for the hands because these colors can confuse new players, who might associate red with Crak and green with Bam. Red‑green combinations can also be difficult to distinguish for those with color vision deficiencies.

How did you come up with the points for each hand?

In partnership with I LOVE MAHJ, we tested The Big Card extensively throughout its development. Prospective hands were evaluated repeatedly through both live play and online simulations, with each round of data informing refinements and further testing until we reached the ideal balance of challenge and playability.

Once the hand selection was finalized, the full card underwent rigorous testing through more than one million simulated games. This data revealed which hands were most likely to win, allowing us to assign point values based on each hand’s relative difficulty. The result is a fair, balanced, and rewarding gameplay experience.

What is the +10 point bonus?

We decided to do things a little differently! Instead of designating specific “concealed” hands, any hand on the card can be played concealed and will earn its printed point value plus a 10-point bonus. For example, a simple 10-point hand could score 20 points if completed with no exposures.

The only exceptions are the hands marked with a “C.” These hands consist solely of singles and pairs and must always be played concealed - so the bonus is already built into their assigned point value.

What skill level is The Big Card designed for?

The Big Card is designed for all skill levels. Expert-crafted and thoroughly data-tested, each hand is assigned a point value based on its difficulty. This allows newcomers to focus on simpler, lower-value hands while more experienced players can chase the higher-value, more challenging ones.

How did you ensure The Big Card supports strategic, flexible play?

Working in collaboration with I LOVE MAHJ, we analyzed data from more than one million simulated games to understand the relative difficulty and winnability of each hand. The results revealed which hands were easiest—those won most often—and which were more complex and challenging. We used this information to calibrate the point values so each hand’s score reflects its true difficulty. The result is a scoring system that rewards strategic decision-making, offers ample switchability, and delivers a gameplay experience that feels fair and engaging for players of all levels.

Why is the ability to switch hands strategically important?

The ability to switch hands is strategically important because your tiles shouldn’t lock you into a single path. As your hand evolves, your strategy can shift too—sometimes toward a more challenging, higher-value hand, or even into a completely different section of the card. Other times, you may need to change course if the complex hand you were building isn’t coming together.

With The Big Card, you have plenty of pivot options, even after making an exposure, so you’re far less likely to be locked in or to reveal exactly which hand you’re pursuing. That’s the power of switchability.

Can I contribute a line to The Big Card?

Yes!  We believe in collective intelligence. Built not by a single mind, but by many. Each year, sections of The Big Card are co-created through crowdsourcing, celebrating creativity and strategic thinking-so give it your best shot!

Is the card really waterproof?

Yes indeed! The Big Card is waterproof, ready to handle spills, splashes, beach trips, poolside fun, or any outdoor adventure.

Can I play with The Big Card on I LOVE MAHJ?

Yes! The Big Card will be available for play on I LOVE MAHJ starting January 1st of each year.

The Big Card: Sections

Where are the singles and pairs?

On The Big Card, singles and pairs don’t have their own section-they pop up in all sections! By mixing them into their natural sections, players are more likely to spot these tricky hands when the tiles line up just right. They’re harder to make, but that’s why they’re worth more points. This organization also makes it easier for players to identify pivot opportunities within the section they’re focusing on.

Where are the quints?

On The Big Card, quints don’t get their own section - they’re sprinkled throughout. This design lets players discover quints where they naturally fit, making it easier to spot those rare opportunities as the game unfolds.

Why does the Winds - Dragons section only have a few options?

Winds and dragons are featured generously across The Big Card rather than confined to a single section. We love the many chances this gives players to use the winds and dragons they pick up during the Charleston - or draw from the wall. This design also boosts the card’s switchability, making it easier to pivot between sections as the hand unfolds.

What is Mad Math?

We love seeing math on the card - so much that it gets its very own section! Like the Big Brain section, these hands feature numbers that aren’t traditionally paired together. And for anyone concerned about doing the math themselves, don’t worry - we’ve done all the calculations for you!

What is Big Brain?

The Big Brain section is designed to push players beyond traditional card groupings. Here, you’ll find numbers that rarely appear together, playful word combinations, and hands that challenge your strategic thinking. These “stretch-your-mind” hands reward creativity and foresight, giving an edge to players who can spot unconventional patterns and plan several moves ahead.

How are concealed hands noted on The Big Card?

Concealed hands are shaded and marked with a “C” for easy identification. These hands consist only of singles and pairs and must always be played concealed. But remember - any other hand on the card can also be played concealed, earning a 10-point bonus!

The Big Card: Parenthesis

What does MATCHING PUNGS mean?
Matching Pungs means that sets of three numbered tiles are the same. For example, if the card says “ANY MATCHING EVEN PUNGS” and there are two sets of pungs, a player could do 222 222 or 444 444 or 666 666 or 888 888.
What does MATCHING KONGS mean?
Matching kongs means that sets of four numbered tiles are the same.  For example, if the card says “MATCHING KONGS: 2s or 6s” and there are two sets of kongs, a player could do 2222 2222 or 6666 6666.
What does NON-MATCHING KONGS mean?
Non-matching kongs means that where there are groups of four numbers, they are a different set of four numbers for each group. For example, if the card says “ANY NON-MATCHING ODD KONGS” and there are two sets of kongs, a player could do 3333 7777.
What does OPPOSITE SUITS mean?

When a hand requires opposite suits, the tiles in one color must be a different suit from tiles in another color.  For example, if one group is dots, the next must be bams or craks.

What does DRAGONS MATCH mean?

Each suit has a corresponding or “matching” dragon.  The green dragon matches the bams, the red dragon matches the craks and the white dragon (soap) matches the dots.  When the color of the dragon in a hand corresponds in color to another element of the hand, then those two elements must match suits.  For example, if the card says “DRAGONS MATCH PUNG” then the dragon must match the suit of the pung.

What is a QUINT?

A quint consists of five identical tiles. Because there are only four of each standard tile in a mahjong set, quints generally require the use of a joker. Flowers, however, are unique. Since a standard mahjong set includes eight flowers, a quint of flowers can be formed without a joker, though one or more may still be used.
